Su uno sfondo umile e contadino si sviluppano le vicende dei tre "re" che sono stali ispirati dall'esperienza giovanile dell'autore nelle campagne. Le tre opere qui raccolte sono "Il re degli alberi", "II re dei bambini" e "Ere degli scacchi". La parola "re", che funge da collante nell'intera trilogia, rappresenta di volta in volta un povero individuo, ricco soltanto di ciò che conquista con il proprio agire: in particolare nel primo racconto simboleggia il Grumo, ostinato boscaiolo custode della natura; nel secondo identifica con ironia un ""giovane istruito" che deve improvvisarsi insegnante - in Cina gli insegnanti sono chiamati "re dei bambini"; e nell'ultimo rappresenta un giovane estremamente povero che trova il suo riscatto morale nel gioco degli scacchi. Scritti per un'urgenza interiore, e non con la precisa intenzione di essere pubblicati, tramite una scrittura semplice e uno stile che ricorda quello dei cantastorie dell'antichità, Acheng riesce a delineare con precisione i tratti del grande paese negli anni tumultuosi che seguirono la rivoluzione culturale.
