"Le origini del totalitarismo" (1951) è un classico della filosofia politica e della politologia del Novecento. Per la Arendt il totalitarismo rappresenta il luogo di cristallizzazione delle contraddizioni dell'epoca moderna e insieme la comparsa in Occidente di un fenomeno radicalmente nuovo. Le categorie tradizionali della politica, del diritto, dell'etica e della filosofia risultano inutilizzabili; quanto avviene nei regimi totalitari non si può descrivere nei termini di semplice oppressione, di tirannide, di illegalità, di immoralità o di nichilismo realizzato, ma richiede una spiegazione "innovativa". Lungi dal presentare una struttura monolitica, l'apparato istituzionale e legale totalitario deve rimanere estremamente duttile e mobile, al fine di permettere la più assoluta discrezionalità. Per questo gli uffici vengono moltiplicati, le giurisdizioni tra loro sovrapposte e i centri di potere continuamente spostati. Soltanto il capo, e una cerchia ristrettissima di collaboratori, tiene nelle sue mani gli ingranaggi effettivi della macchina totalitaria. Nelle Origini tale macchina viene smontata e analizzata pezzo per pezzo: i metodi propagandistici, le formule organizzative, l'apparato statale, la polizia segreta, il fattore ideologico e, infine, il campo di sterminio, istituzione suprema e caratteristica di ogni regime totalitario.
