"Quando mi è stato proposto questo concorso, ho pensato che sarebbe stata la cosa più facile del mondo scegliere le dodici più belle storie di Sherlock Holmes. In realtà, scoprii ben presto che mi ero appena impegnato in un compito davvero molto arduo". Nel 1927, lo "Strand Magazine" sfidò i suoi affezionati lettori a cimentarsi in un insolito concorso: indovinare quali delle sue innumerevoli storie con protagonista l'ineffabile Sherlock Holmes Arthur Conan Doyle avrebbe potuto considerare le sue preferite. (Fu R. T. Newman di Spring Hill, Wellingborough, ad aggiudicarsi il premio di 100 sterline individuando dieci dei dodici racconti). In seguito, in un articolo pubblicato sempre sullo "Strand", Doyle rese nota la sua scelta e, nel suo stile inimitabile, ne spiegò per ciascun racconto le ragioni. I racconti inclusi - da La fascia maculata a I signorotti di Reigate - possono essere considerati dei veri e propri classici del genere poliziesco. Le dodici storie vengono raccolte qui per la prima volta in italiano, accompagnate dall'originale articolo.

This collection of Sherlock Holmes stories was chosen by Arthur Conan Doyle himself (in 1927), and the reasons why he chose these twelve as his favourites are also included.
