Che cos'è la felicità? In una "Lettera sulla felicità" a Meneceo Epicuro sostiene che non c'è età per conoscere la felicità: non si è mai né troppo vecchi né troppo giovani per occuparsi del benessere dell'anima. Nella sua vita naturale l'uomo allontana da sé il dolore sia fisico che psichico e l'assenza di queste due cause porta al raggiungimento della felicità. Ma non è sufficiente: Epicuro sostiene che si deve provare piacere e quindi classifica i piaceri dividendoli in tre grandi categorie: i piaceri naturali e necessari; i piaceri naturali ma non del tutto necessari; i piaceri del tutto accessori. L'uomo ha anche delle necessità sovra-strutturate come l'ambizione a migliorarsi, a crescere intellettualmente, a primeggiare sugli altri. Per raggiungere questi obiettivi mette in campo tutta la sua passione e la sua anima e quando raggiunge l'obiettivo trova un appagamento di felicità proprio dell'intelletto. In questa breve lettera, Epicuro ci insegna cosa serve per essere felici, e cosa invece ostacola il raggiungimento della felicità.
