Cina, XV secolo. Secondo Confucio «una donna istruita è una donna senza valore», ma Tan Yunxian non è d’accordo. Rimasta senza la madre, fin da bambina le vengono insegnati dai nonni i pilastri della medicina cinese, i Quattro Esami – guardare, chiedere e ascoltare, annusare e toccare, sentire il polso –, un approccio che un medico uomo non può mai mettere in atto con una paziente donna perché la tradizione lo vieta, giudicandolo sconveniente. E così ci sono donne che devono curare altre donne, come Meiling, promettente levatrice che conosce la consistenza dei corpi e la viscosità del sangue: per lei toccare è prassi quotidiana, mentre per un medico è riprovevole. Yunxian e Meiling si scambiano nozioni e rimedi, diventano amiche e giurano che condivideranno gioie e battaglie.
«Niente fango, niente loto», si dicono: dalle avversità può sbocciare la bellezza.
Ma poi Yunxian è costretta a sposarsi e tutto quello che ha costruito sembra franare. Tutto quello che ha imparato sembra dover essere dimenticato, ora che è una moglie. Ma il suo desiderio di curare, di aiutare donne e ragazze di ogni ceto sociale è più forte persino della tradizione, alla quale si ribella. Con l’aiuto di Meiling, Yunxian si spingerà così dove nessuna donna cinese era mai arrivata, contribuendo in modo indelebile al progresso della medicina.

I absolutely loved this story! A well researched and fictional account on the life of a real historical figure.. Tan Yunxian, who published a book on her life as a physician in 15c China. So interesting to read of the women’s lives during this time in China’s history. Don’t miss this one!
