Se tante lettrici, in tutto il mondo, amano con passione i libri di Clarice Lispector è perché pochissime sono le scrittrici che come lei hanno saputo imporre una voce così prepotentemente femminile - e al tempo stesso mai banale, mai gravata da rivendicazioni, o querimonie, o ammaestramenti edificanti, ma, al contrario, audace, inquieta, ardente, attraversata da fremiti, aperta a epifanie e illuminazioni. Qui, ancora una volta, la protagonista è una donna, una ragazza di nome Lucrécia, che si lascia vivere, in una sorta di incantata ottusità, e deve riuscire a dare una forma al mondo che la circonda - per potersene appropriare. Un mondo frantumato, al pari di quello dell'autrice stessa, dove si è continuamente sbalzati fra una realtà che viene a mancare e una realtà che sopraffà. Accompagneremo Lucrécia nel percorso che dal sobborgo di São Geraldo, ancora a tratti odoroso di stalla, la porterà, al seguito di un marito ricco, nella grande città, dove frequenterà teatri, ristoranti e negozi eleganti; poi di nuovo, rimasta vedova, nel borgo natìo - molto meno selvaggio, ormai, quasi irriconoscibile; e forse anche, chissà, a incontrare un nuovo marito. Ma la vera protagonista dei libri di Lispector come sempre è la scrittura: immaginifica, abbacinante, ustionante - quella di «una Virginia Woolf amazzonica, arruffata e vagamente stregonesca» come la definì una volta Roberto Calasso.
