Le centoventiquattro lettere a Lucilio furono composte da Seneca dopo il ritiro dalla vita pubblica, probabilmente tra il 62 e il 65 d.C. Non si propongono come un’opera sistematica, ma come un insieme di spunti e riflessioni su temi diversi, cui l’autore si accosta spesso partendo da riflessioni su squarci di vita vissuta. In queste pagine il grande filosofo scopre la propria dimensione intima e interiore, dominata dall’incertezza, in cui la serenità è l’approdo temporaneo di una mente inquieta che avvolta nel mistero delle cose cerca nella fermezza dello spirito un sostegno alla propria esistenza. Il tono resta sempre confidenziale e discorsivo, fruibile come una conversazione amichevole, perché come ebbe a dire lo stesso Seneca «la filosofia è un buon consiglio; e nessun consiglio si dà ad alta voce».
