Non è strano che Patrick Leigh Fermor dicesse di tenere questo libro "vicinissimo al cuore". All'inizio degli anni Trenta Leigh Fermor aveva infatti attraversato, diretto a Costantinopoli, la Transilvania, ricavandone la materia forse più calda per il suo grande libro di viaggi, Tra i boschi e l'acqua. Per William Blacker, tuttavia, quella stessa regione dell'attuale Romania sembra essere non la meta di un viaggio, quanto piuttosto uno stato della mente, o degli occhi. Blacker la visita quasi per caso poco dopo la caduta del Muro e, incantato da tutto ciò che vede, decide di stabilirsi nel suo distretto più remoto, il Maramures, adeguandosi a uno stile di vita immutato da secoli. Ma il demone dell'irrequietezza lo attrae presto più a sud, dove le montagne digradano nelle colline della Terra dei Sassoni. Qui Blacker trova un mondo completamente diverso, e assai più movimentato. I lindi e inappuntabili sassoni sono in gran parte emigrati in Germania, e nelle loro case si è insediato il popolo degli zingari, la cui capacità di inventare storie, per poi impersonarle, colpisce almeno quanto l'incapacità di districarsene. Da qui in poi - da quando cioè nella vita di Blacker entrano Natalia e Marishka, due sorelle diversissime, e ugualmente indimenticabili quella che era cominciata come una serena elegia su un'Europa scomparsa si trasforma in una rapsodia zigana: a volte languida, a volte scatenata, ma alla quale in ogni caso è impossibile non abbandonarsi.

Loved it! Loved it! An elegaic memoir of a vanishing country and people, including its much-maligned gypsy communities. Now I know why that poem remembered from childhood went something like " Now and then I wish I could Live with the gypsies in the wood' It did NOT leave me dry-eyed...
