Grande lettrice di romanzi sentimentali, Emma ricerca la passione nella vita quotidiana rifugiandosi prima in fantasie romantiche, poi nei lussi che ha sempre sognato da ragazza, infine in relazioni incaute. Eppure, nemmeno questa evasione dal mondo familiare riuscirà a portarle la felicità sperata. Pubblicato nel 1857, il romanzo venne attaccato per i contenuti immorali ma impose a lettori e lettrici un nuovo modello di eroina.
