Albert Campion, detective e gentiluomo, si sveglia in un letto d’ospedale, solo e spaventato, soprattutto perché non ricorda niente, di sé e di quello che è successo per farlo finire lì. Sa solo di avere una missione importantissima, un complotto da sventare, e dato che siamo nel 1940, dev’essere qualcosa che riguarda l’Inghilterra in guerra. Sente un poliziotto parlare di arresto, fuori dalla stanza, e decide di scappare rubando la tenuta da vigile del fuoco accanto all’estintore. Viene raccolto in macchina da una bella donna, che sembra conoscerlo benissimo, e portato in un’aristocratica magione dove lo aspetta un party e una buona accoglienza. Perdipiù la bella giovane donna dice di essere la sua fidanzata. Campion continua a nascondere il proprio stato di amnesia, e mette il cervello rimasto all’opera per sventare comunque il terribile pericolo che incombe sulla sua patria in guerra. Da qui il mystery si trasforma in thriller/spy story, con una serie di colpi di scena, scoperte, tradimenti, attentati, inseguimenti nella miglior tradizione di tutti questi generi. Fino alla rivelazione finale e alla scoperta del traditore. Margery Allingham rivela qui una scrittura di eccellente livello e un senso dell’umorismo degno dei migliori autori britannici. La difficoltà di raccontare per tutto il romanzo un Campion afflitto da amnesia senza svelare troppo dei retroscena dà un’idea chiara della abilità di questa autrice, famosissima, letta e addirittura rubata nelle biblioteche più di qualunque altra «regina del crimine» inglese, compresa Agatha Christie. Il premio del traditore è stato ripubblicato di recente in Gran Bretagna tra l’entusiasmo dei critici e dei lettori. Una curiosità: il complotto del romanzo, si scoprirà alla fine della guerra, era davvero stato ordito ma mai messo in atto.
