Come molti prima di lei, Maria Lagana è arrivata a Hollywood per sfuggire al suo passato. Nata in Italia, Maria è emigrata con la madre a Los Angeles all'età di dodici anni, quando suo padre è finito al confino in un paese sperduto dell'entroterra calabrese. Noto avvocato romano, Giuseppe Lagana era solito difendere socialisti e altre figure invise al regime fascista, fino al giorno in cui la scoperta di alcuni documenti compromettenti gli è costata l'arresto e l'esilio. Nel 1941, alla vigilia dell'ingresso in guerra degli Stati Uniti, Maria è diventata produttrice associata alla Mercury Pictures, una casa cinematografica sull'orlo della bancarotta, alle prese con le maglie sempre più strette della censura. Maria è abilissima ad aggirarla: per anni lei e il padre hanno intrattenuto una fitta corrispondenza, ricorrendo ad allusioni e doppi sensi per evitare i tagli che i censori fascisti infliggevano alle loro lettere. Tuttavia, dal 1938, Maria non ne ha più ricevuta nessuna. Nell'ultima, una frase importante era scampata alla lama della censura: «Ci vediamo presto». Ma Giuseppe Lagana non è mai arrivato in America. Mentre la notte della Storia scende anche su Los Angeles, il cinema diventa un microcosmo di esuli dall'Europa: poeti modernisti che tentano la fortuna come sceneggiatori di b-movies , architetti famosi che si adattano a fare i miniaturisti, attori ebrei che si ritrovano a vestire i panni dei loro ex aguzzini. Finché tra loro spunta un giovane fotografo italiano nel cui volto Maria scorge un vago ricordo del passato. Porta con sé un nome falso, una scatola piena di ritagli di carta e, forse, la risposta che Maria anela e teme più di ogni altra cosa: la verità sul destino di suo padre.
