J.R. cresce catturato da una voce. La voce di suo padre, un discjockey di New York che ha preso il volo prima che lui pronunciasse la sua prima parola. Con l'orecchio schiacciato contro la radio, vorrebbe spremere da quel timbro caldo i segreti dell'identità e dell'universo maschili. Sua madre è il suo mondo, è la sua roccia, ma lui cerca anche qualcosa di più, qualcosa che riesce ad avvertire solo in quella voce. A otto anni, quando anche la voce alla radio scompare, J.R. scappa disperato fino al bar all'angolo, e lì scopre un nuovo mondo, e un coro turbolento di nuove voci. Quelli che si rifugiano al «Dickens» per raccontare le proprie storie o scordare i propri guai sono poliziotti e poeti, allibratori e soldati, star del cinema e pugili suonati. E poiché si diventa grandi per imitazione, a ciascuno di questi uomini J.R. ruberà qualcosa, diventando un piccolo «ladro di identità». Appassionato e malinconicamente divertente, il racconto della lotta di un ragazzo per diventare uomo, di un turbolento amore tra una madre e il suo unico figlio, ma anche un ritratto di come gli uomini rimangano, nel fondo del loro cuore, dei ragazzi perduti.

Any book that can sweep you into a story and its beautifully rendered characters (all the more beautiful, poignant, and powerful because they are real) is worthy of recognition, and I found this memoir to be fascinating and enormously moving.
