David Lamb, attraente uomo di mezza età, sta vivendo una profonda crisi: dopo la perdita del padre e il fallimento del proprio matrimonio, ha bisogno di una svolta. Spera di riuscire a riconquistare un po' di fiducia in se stesso e nella propria bontà dedicandosi all'undicenne Tommie, una goffa ragazzina incontrata per caso. È convinto di poterla aiutare a sfuggire allo squallore e all'apatia della vita cui sembra destinata, iniziandola alla bellezza della natura incontaminata. La persuade ad affrontare con lui in gran segreto un viaggio in macchina che da Chicago li condurrà in una baita sperduta sulle Montagne Rocciose. Tra Lamb e Tommie si instaura presto un rapporto ambiguo, e l'esperienza che finiranno per vivere cambierà entrambi in un modo che nessuno dei due avrebbe mai potuto immaginare. Lamb esplora quelle dinamiche di seduzione e dipendenza che oltrepassano i confini imposti dall'età anagrafica, analizzando le conseguenze dell'egoismo e della solitudine e costringendo il lettore a riconsiderare i preconcetti della moralità convenzionale. Da questo romanzo è stato tratto il film omonimo presentato al festival South by Southwest (SXSW) di Austin, Texas.
