Spostandosi fra le strade torride e maleodoranti di una Newark sotto assedio e l'immacolato campo estivo per ragazzi di Indian Hill, sulle vette delle Pocono Mountains - la cui "fresca aria montana era monda d'ogni sostanza inquinante" -, "Nemesi" mette in scena un uomo di polso e sani principi che, armato delle migliori intenzioni, combatte la sua guerra privata contro l'epidemia. Roth è di una tenera esattezza nel delineare ogni passaggio della discesa di Cantor verso la catastrofe, e non è meno esatto nel descrivere la condizione infantile.
