Cernyševskij scrisse questo romanzo nel 1863, mentre era detenuto nella fortezza di Pietro e Paolo a Pietroburgo per la sua attività e i suoi scritti sovversivi. Opera a tesi sulle relazioni tra gli individui in una società rinnovata dall’esperienza collettiva, Che fare? è incentrato prevalentemente sul rapporto uomo-donna inteso come legame fondamentale attraverso cui analizzare tutti gli aspetti e i problemi della sfera sociale. Nella vicenda della protagonista Vera Pavlovna, decisa a vivere la sua vita sentimentale senza accettare compromessi e senza rinunciare alla sua indipendenza, il romanzo riflette gli ideali del socialismo rivoluzionario presovietico: uguaglianza tra i sessi ed emancipazione femminile, critica delle convenzioni borghesi, esaltazione del cooperativismo e dell’impegno etico. Il libro, conosciuto attraverso copie clandestine durante la vita dello scrittore, fu pubblicato solo nel 1905; divenuto il «breviario di ogni giovane russo», come ebbe a definirlo Kropotkin, esercitò una profonda influenza sulla nuova generazione rivoluzionaria dei tempi di Lenin, che ne riprese il titolo in un celebre scritto politico.
