Le democrazie occidentali – da sempre incompiute – sono oggi quanto mai fragili, sottoposte all’attacco congiunto di un’unica, spaventosa chimera: quella del populismo autoritario e dei grandi interessi economici che lo sostengono. La figura-simbolo degli anni che stiamo attraversando è quello che Chomsky non esita a definire «il criminale più pericoloso della storia umana»: Donald Trump. La sua vicenda, anche se in apparenza conclusa, dimostra che dare per scontata la salute delle democrazie occidentali è un errore clamoroso. Il feroce attacco alla democrazia da parte del capitale globale, in corso da decenni, non è certo terminato, e continua ovunque, anche negli USA, in altre forme più perniciose ancora, trovando in ogni parte del mondo un alleato nelle tendenze autoritarie, razziste, nazionaliste e xenofobe: proprio mentre le crisi sanitaria ed ecologica mettono a dura prova la fibra delle comunità locali e della società globale. L’attivista Chomsky, naturalmente, ci sprona all’azione: Trump è stato infine sconfitto ma la fragilità della democrazia rimane tale, e mai come in questo tempo la lotta per salvare il sistema democratico s’intreccia con la lotta per salvare l’umanità e il pianeta stesso. Bisogna agire in fretta. E siamo tutti noi a doverlo fare.
