Dagli Egizi alla Grande Guerra (dal momento che è stata questa, più che la seconda guerra mondiale, quella che ha, secondo l'autore, radicalmente cambiato tutto). Il signorile, garbato, curioso, spiritosissimo J.J. Norwich (1929-2018) è interessato soprattutto al racconto della storia, o addirittura a volte al racconto nella storia visto il gusto per il ritratto e l'episodio esemplare in cui gli piace intrattenere. Così quando il risvolto umano, i caratteri personali prendono il sopravvento (nel caso, per esempio, delle guerre carliste in Spagna o del Risorgimento italiano) la sua scrittura si esalta al massimo e trasmette brio e animazione autentici. I suoi libri, che spaziano dai Normanni di Sicilia (e i suoi due testi furono di fatto i primi a richiamare precisa attenzione verso quel fondamentale capitolo della storia universale) alla Repubblica di Venezia all'Impero bizantino, si accompagnavano all'amore del viaggiatore per i luoghi e alla concreta familiarità del diplomatico. E, pur nel grande successo, Norwich ha sempre dichiarato di non essere uno storico di professione né tantomeno un accademico. Ma non gli rende onore definirlo un divulgatore anche se a questa tradizione nobilissima della cultura britannica si lega. È un narratore della storia, e degli avvenimenti e dei contesti cattura qualcosa che non appartiene tanto all'informazione storica, quanto nella sostanza al piacere del testo: vale a dire, il colore. Senza, per questo, far cedere mai il sapere. Ne nasce un miscuglio elegante e sempre originale.

I was really looking forward to a history of the Mediterranean which included both shores and a history of the maritime and geographical impact of the sea on the peoples living around it and really it was little more than an historical travelogue. I found this book an entertaining read which filled in a few gaps in my knowledge within its stated remit.
