Nelle sale di un antico castello, situato nei pressi della cittadina inglese di Ascot, da secoli si aggira un fantasma. È lo spettro sir Simon, un vecchio signore con gli occhi rossi come carboni ardenti, lunghi boccoli grigi e pesanti ceppi ai polsi e alle caviglie. Eppure sir Simon non fa paura. Al contrario, è preso di mira dai figli degli Otis – l’«orribile, volgare e disonesta famiglia» che abita il castello – e cade spesso vittima dei loro scherzi. Ad avere pietà di lui sarà solo Virginia, la sorella tanto «buona e gentile» dei giovani aguzzini, l’unica in grado di trovare nel singolare inquilino un confidente e un amico.
