"Memorial" è una traduzione dell'atmosfera dell'Iliade, non della sua vicenda. Se Matthew Arnold e tanti interpreti moderni dell'lliade ne hanno esaltato la "nobiltà", i critici antichi ne hanno lodato l'enargeia, ovvero "l'insostenibile fulgore della realtà", in questa versione Alice Oswald ha recuperato l'enargeia del poema omerico privandolo delle sue parti narrative «come se si togliesse il tetto a una chiesa per ricordare ciò che si sta venerando». "Memorial", dunque, è «un poema bipolare fatto di similitudini e brevi biografie di guerrieri» derivanti da fonti poetiche distinte: le similitudini dalla poesia pastorale; le biografie dalla tradizione greca della lamentazione.
