Il capitano Jack Aubrey è stato espulso dalla Royal Navy per un crimine che non ha commesso. Ma quando tutto sembra essere perduto, provvidenziale giunge l'aiuto di Maturin che, grazie a un'eredità, acquista per l'amico la vecchia Surprise, coinvolgendolo in un viaggio che potrebbe restituirgli l'onore perduto.
