Jack Aubrey, costretto a terra da troppo tempo e ormai in preda a un desiderio incontenibile di esplorare mari sconosciuti, non mostra la minima esitazione quando gli viene proposto il comando di un vecchio vascello da cinquanta cannoni, dal passato non proprio glorioso. Tra ufficiali inetti e marinai scoraggiati, tra tempeste improvvise e deviazioni repentine, Aubrey dovrà fare appello a tutta la sua esperienza di vecchio lupo di mare per aver salva la vita e per portare a compimento la sua missione.
