Blue Van Meer, dopo la morte della madre in un incidente stradale, trascorre l'infanzia e la giovinezza come una nomade, viaggiando per gli Stati Uniti con il padre, professore di scienze politiche e intellettuale di tendenze radicali. Nonostante il vagabondaggio, il padre si dedica senza interruzione a rendere la figlia erudita, insegnandole interi testi letterari a memoria, i nomi delle piante, degli animali, i fatti della storia. All'educazione intellettuale si affianca quella sentimentale: Blue è gelosissima del padre, che ha una relazione dopo l'altra, e quasi per dispetto, già a tredici anni ha una storia d'amore con un giardiniere sudamericano. Finalmente, nell'ultimo anno di liceo, Blue si ferma a St. Gallway, dove entra in contatto con un circolo esclusivo di ragazzi tanto geniali quanto sregolati, dediti a ogni eccesso, guidati dalla carismatica professoressa Hannah Schneider. Il gruppo presto è scosso dalla morte di un amico di Hannah (che si scoprirà poi essere un esperto di strategie antiterrorismo), seguita dalla morte della stessa Hannah, dopo aver annunciato a Blue una serie di scioccanti rivelazioni.
