Ross Hunter, giornalista investigativo, stava per non rispondere a quella telefonata. E forse sarebbe stato meglio così, perché dopo aver sentito la voce al di là del filo, la sua vita è cambiata per sempre. E anche il mondo, ora, rischia di cambiare in modo irreversibile. A parlare è il dottor Harry F. Cook, stimato professore nonché cristiano devoto, che impone a Ross di fermarsi e ascoltarlo. «Vorrei solo rassicurarla che non sono uno squilibrato, signor Hunter. So che potrà sembrarle strano, ma di recente ho avuto la prova assoluta dell’esistenza di Dio e mi hanno detto che uno scrittore, un rispettato giornalista che si chiama Ross Hunter, potrebbe aiutarmi a farmi prendere sul serio.» Ross non crede alle sue orecchie. Il nome di Cook non gli è nuovo e il suo istinto da reporter gli dice che forse potrebbe ricavare qualcosa da quella storia. Gli concede il beneficio del dubbio e si accordano per incontrarsi. Ma una svolta inaspettata del destino impedisce al dottor Cook di approfondire il discorso. Ben presto, Ross comincia a ricevere delle minacce. Nella sua mente da astuto giornalista a caccia di intrighi, la situazione comincia a farsi chiara: se ci fosse qualcosa di vero in quello che gli ha detto Cook…? Ma cosa potrebbe provare l’esistenza di Dio? E di quale Dio? E che conseguenze avrebbe una rivelazione di questa portata per il mondo? Ross si rende conto di essere in pericolo, e mentre tenta di salvarsi la vita scopre chi sono i molti nemici che vogliono invece metterlo a tacere: un predicatore miliardario, un ricco amministratore delegato che vedrebbe il lavoro di una vita andare in fumo e… le religioni di tutto il mondo.
