Incapace di affrontare una realtà ebbra di pianto, e di mettere ordine fra le pulsioni opposte della sua anima, Fernando Pessoa dà vita a numerose figure eteronime, 'subpersonalità' caratterizzate da una particolare voce poetica a cui assegna una parte importante della propria produzione. Gioco di specchi, moltiplicazione ironica e mistificatrice di maschere, o piuttosto costruzione difensiva dal dolore del vivere, dalle incertezze del conoscere? L'antologia di Luigi Panarese che qui si ripropone rivelò nel 1967 la grandezza di Pessoa al pubblico italiano, e da allora si è riproposta ininterrottamente in questa sua funzione. Con l'ampia scelta dell'ortonimo (che rappresenta il tentativo di contenere razionalmente la vita e l'esperienza del mondo), e una significativa selezione dei tre eteronimi maggiori (Alberto Caeiro, sensibilissimo poeta bucolico, Ricardo Reis, autore di odi sotto il segno di Orazio, e il futurista Alvaro de Campos), il volume conduce il lettore per quello che si è via via configurato nel corso degli anni come un vero e proprio oceano poetico.
