L'opera "filosofica" di Poincaré, risultato di dieci anni di riflessioni scientifiche, fu il primo tentativo dell'autore di affrontare alcune questioni di grande rilevanza nella scienza da un punto di vista filosofico, esaminando in particolare la natura del linguaggio, e il rapporto tra esperienza e conoscenza. Tuttavia, al convenzionalismo sistematico e generalizzato dei filosofi, Poincaré risponde con uno studio critico, interrogandosi anche sul ruolo e sui limiti delle convenzioni scientifiche. Spaziando dalla geometria alla meccanica razionale, dalla fisica al calcolo delle probabilità, egli tenta di definire in modo innovativo la funzione dell'esperienza in rapporto alla conoscenza e, in particolare, l'essenza del ragionamento matematico, soffermandosi su numerosi esempi tratti dalla storia dell'ottica e dell'elettricità, fino ai famosi saggi e capitoli dedicati alle geometrie non-euclidee, agli "incommensurabili" e alla "fine della materia".

FRANÇAIS: Poincaré est l'un des représentants du conventionnalisme, qui soutient que les théories scientifiques sont purement conventionnelles et ne représentent pas fidèlement la réalité. Why, oh, why did I want to read this book? No, seriously? This book was entirely too deep for me, very technical. The only thing I will take away from this book, other then I am not a math and science person, is that there are no absolutes. That's it.

La première partie, plus mathématique, est très intéressante et encore très actuelle. La deuxième, plus physique, est hélas assez "vieillie" : de l'ether partout, des électrons assez méconnus,... Cela donne toutefois envie de se plonger dans l'histoire de la physique.
