Da quando il loro collegio è stato messo in quarantena, Hetty, Byatt e Reese, e le loro compagne di scuola, sono barricate nell'istituto, su un'isola al largo della costa americana. Un'epidemia sconosciuta, infatti, ha incominciato a diffondersi. Tutto è incominciato piano piano. Prima sono morte le insegnanti, una dopo l'altra. Poi sono state infettate le studentesse, che hanno visto trasformare i loro corpi in qualcosa di strano e alieno. Da allora è passato un anno e mezzo e le ragazze, tagliate fuori dal resto del mondo e costrette a badare a loro stesse, non osano spingersi oltre le cancellate del collegio, dato che l'epidemia si è propagata nella foresta circostante rendendola un luogo pericoloso e inospitale. Quel che sanno è che devono cercare di restare vive il più a lungo possibile, in attesa della cura che è stata loro promessa. Ma quando Byatt sparisce, Hetty decide di tentare il tutto per tutto pur di trovarla, anche se questo significa violare la quarantena e andare incontro agli orrori che potrebbero esserci oltre il cancello. Dopotutto la ragazza non ha altra scelta: Byatt è la sua più cara amica e gli amici si proteggono sempre l'un l'altro. Ma quando mette in atto il suo piano, Hetty scopre che dietro a ciò che sta sconvolgendo le loro vite c'è molto di più, più di quello che avrebbe mai potuto immaginare.

I didn't love this and I am SO SAD about it. I did enjoy the first half of the book, but the ending was such a let down that it honestly tainted any positive feelings I had for whatever came before it. The biggest womp.
