Teddy è un dolce bambino di cinque anni, intelligente e curioso, che ama disegnare qualsiasi cosa: gli alberi, gli animali, i genitori e, occasionalmente, anche la sua amica immaginaria, Anya, che dorme sotto il suo letto e gioca con lui quando è da solo. Ma ora a occuparsi di lui per tutta l'estate c'è Mallory, la nuova babysitter. I due si sono piaciuti fin dal primo incontro, tanto che il signor Maxwell non ha potuto opporsi all'assunzione della ragazza, che nonostante la giovane età ha dei difficili trascorsi con la droga. All'apparenza tutto è perfetto: i Maxwell sono gentili e comprensivi, la loro casa sembra uscita direttamente dalla copertina di una rivista e le giornate sono scandite da una routine serena, che comprende giochi, pisolini e bagni in piscina. Fino a quando i disegni di Teddy cominciano a cambiare, diventano sempre più strani, cupi, quasi macabri e rivelano un tratto decisamente troppo complesso per un bambino di quell'età. Che cosa sta succedendo? Per Teddy è colpa di Anya, è lei a dirgli cosa rappresentare e a guidare la sua mano. Qualcosa non va e, anche se può sembrare una follia, solo Mallory può scoprire la verità prima che sia troppo tardi. Un thriller che sconfina nel paranormale e che, grazie alla forza espressiva delle illustrazioni, vi sorprenderà, pagina dopo pagina, in un inquietante crescendo, fino all'imprevedibile colpo di scena finale.
