Harriet Westaway vive a Brighton in un piccolo appartamento. Sua madre, che l’ha cresciuta da sola, è morta in un incidente stradale poco prima del suo diciottesimo compleanno e Harriet, dopo aver abbandonato la scuola, ha perso i contatti con tutti gli amici. Un giorno riceve una lettera inaspettata dalla Cornovaglia: la nonna, morendo, le ha lasciato una cospicua eredità. Da una parte è una notizia fantastica, perché Harriet si trova in una pessima situazione finanziaria ed è indebitata con un usuraio, dall’altra è una notizia piuttosto strana, perché la sua vera nonna è morta più di vent’anni prima. Evidentemente si tratta di un caso di omonimia, che però Harriet decide di sfruttare a suo vantaggio utilizzando le sue capacità manipolatorie che le permettono di sopravvivere come cartomante, lo stesso lavoro che faceva sua madre. Se c’è una persona in grado di partecipare a un funerale reclamando un’eredità che non le spetta è proprio lei. Ma Harriet non sa quello che la attende e ignora che la sua decisione cambierà drasticamente la sua vita per sempre. Perché non potrà più tornare indietro, nemmeno quando si renderà conto di correre un rischio mortale.

FIVE STARS So, here's the thing. You can't really compare Ruth Ware to any contemporary writers. The pure "old-fashioned-ness" of her writing style is so refreshing that it comes across as modern. 3,75/5 Najlepsza ze wszystkich Ware’owych książek. Zagadka trochę nie istnieje i chyba właśnie dlatego mi się podobała. Więcej w niej obyczajowości niż mroku i niepokoju.
