Saffo è la più grande poetessa mai esistita. Vissuta a Lesbo nel VII secolo a.C., dopo un lungo soggiorno in Sicilia fondò una sorta di comunità di fanciulle consacrate al culto di Afrodite e delle Muse. Della vasta produzione poetica di Saffo, che scrisse in dialetto eolico, a noi restano un'ode intera e numerosi frammenti, di mirabile bellezza. Saffo è la poetessa dell'amore, un amore che è fuoco e febbre, tenerezza e gelosia, un amore che rivolge principalmente alle fanciulle a lei devote, la cui bellezza è per lei una sorta di rivelazione del sacro. L'amore è per Saffo un'indomabile forza della natura, a cui niente e nessuno può resistere, ed è memoria, ricordo straziante delle esperienze passate, per sempre perdute.
