Nel tentativo di aiutarla, Margaret si troverà coinvolta in una vicenda densa di atmosfere crepuscolari dove il mistero e il delitto sembrano costituire l’essenza della condizione umana. È una scrittura, quella della Waters, che non cede mai al sentimentalismo. Spicchi di verità si affacciano nell’avvicendarsi di scene mozzafiato per poi tornare a celarsi in un gioco sapiente di rimandi tra il presente e il passato delle due protagoniste. L’intera storia, dunque, deve essere rielaborata dal lettore volta per volta, quasi per magio o ipnosi. Una rappresentazione della realtà che si costruisce per sovrapposizioni e confronti fino al colmo della suspense, quando la mente e i sensi potranno dirsi finalmente soddisfatti.

Sarah Waters is one of my favourite authors. I'm savouring each book of hers, she portrays gothic atmosphere perfectly for me, I really enjoyed this! but the pacing could be quicker for my personal taste and I wasn't keen on the ending 😭
I absolutely adored this. Sarah Waters is such an incredible writer and fast becoming one of my favourites. The plotting is brilliant, the themes fascinating, the historical world building spot on, and the charactisation impeccable. Would highly recommend!!
I have said it before, I will say it again. I cannot fathom how Sarah Waters does it, how she can draw the reader into this entirely other world, this other period, time, place, complete immersion. "Sexy, Spooky, Stylish" - that's the blurb on the cover. If I was not a Sarah Waters fan already, I would have picked up the book based on those words. How can you resist a book with that description? After reading the book, I can safely say that those words are an accurate description of Affinity.
I am sad to give a Sarah Water’s book this score. It drew me into the story and I loved how the intrigue grew. The gothic prison enthralled me through the language of Waters’ descriptions.
