In "Se la strada potesse parlare" James Baldwin ci racconta una struggente storia d'amore in un mondo fatto di dolore e ingiustizia. Attraverso gli occhi di Tish, una diciannovenne bella e innamorata, conosciamo Fonny, il giovane scultore da cui aspetta un figlio. I due sono cresciuti insieme, nello stesso quartiere, insieme hanno giocato, si sono rincorsi, hanno fatto l'amore ridendo e riso facendo l'amore. Il racconto mescola romanticismo e tristezza. Tish e Fonny avevano programmato di sposarsi ma Fonny viene accusato ingiustamente di aver stuprato una donna portoricana. Unico nero in un confronto all'americana, viene riconosciuto colpevole e incarcerato. Fonny è innocente eppure spetta a lui e alla sua famiglia dimostrare - "e pagare per dimostrare" - la sua innocenza. Tish tenta con ogni mezzo di sostenere l'uomo che ama mentre la gravidanza diventa sempre più visibile. Come il blues - dolce, malinconico e pieno di verità - questo libro ci colpisce, prima di tutto, emotivamente. Ci sono la rabbia e il dolore, ma sopra ogni altro sentimento a dominare è l'amore - l'amore potente di una donna per il suo uomo e l'amore avvolgente di una famiglia disposta a tutto, fino all'estremo sacrificio. I love it when I get to stare at this blank page, where I’m supposed to put my thoughts into words, and all I can think to say is… wow! This book is profound, heartbreaking, and masterfully told. James Baldwin writes in such a way that his stories and characters feel more real than fictional.
