L’Anabasi (387-371 ca a.C.) racconta la famosa «ritirata dei Diecimila», l’avventuroso ritorno in patria di diecimila mercenari greci reduci dalla disastrosa spedizione di Ciro il Giovane contro il fratello Artaserse II per la conquista del trono persiano: un’odissea lunga e travagliata dalle rive del Tigri alle sponde del mar Nero, una massacrante marcia di 1.800 chilometri attraverso territori impervi e pericolosi. Alla guida degli sbandati in rotta vi è lo stesso Senofonte, protagonista e poi cantore della memorabile impresa. Pieno di giovanile esuberanza e smania di avventura, ha partecipato all’operazione militare forse per il bisogno di affrancarsi dalla potestà del maestro Socrate, e dopo la sconfitta di Cunassa ha assunto il comando della retroguardia con coraggio e autorevolezza portando in salvo la gran parte dei soldati greci. Memoriale di guerra e al tempo stesso diario intimo di un uomo alla ricerca di sé stesso, la cronaca di Senofonte unisce alla vivacità della narrazione il fascino dei riferimenti etnografici e la precisione descrittiva nel tratteggiare la geografia dei luoghi.
