Nel dicembre 2010 la comunità scientifica viene colpita da una notizia eccezionale: è stato scoperto un DNA umano sconosciuto. In una grotta siberiana, in località Denisova, gli antropologi hanno disseppellito il frammento fossile di una falange, sicuramente umana, e dal suo interno hanno potuto estrarre del materiale genetico: non è di Homo sapiens e nemmeno di Homo neanderthalensis. È completamente un’altra cosa.
Dunque, 50 000 anni fa Sapiens ha incontrato Neandertal, ma anche un altro umano, una specie nuova, definita per la prima volta solo dai suoi geni, che per ora non ha neppure un nome scientifico.
