Arrivato cinquant'anni prima dalla nativa Alvernia senza un soldo in tasca, Auguste Mature, che muore, schiantato da un ictus, all'inizio di questo romanzo, è riuscito a trasformare il piccolo bistrot di rue de la Grande-Truanderie, dove andavano a bere un caffè corretto o a mangiare un boccone i lavoratori dei mercati generali - il «ventre di Parigi», come li chiamava Émile Zola -, in un ristorante che, pur conservando i vecchi tavoli di marmo e il classico bancone di stagno, è ora frequentato dal Tout-Paris. Gli è sempre stato accanto il figlio Antoine, il quale, prima ancora che la camera ardente sia stata allestita, deve fare i conti - alla lettera - con il fratello maggiore, un giudice istruttore aizzato da una moglie arcigna, e con quello minore, un cialtrone semialcolizzato che millanta fumosi progetti immobiliari e sopravvive spillando soldi al mite, generoso Antoine. Lo stesso Antoine contro cui ora si accanisce, sospettandolo di aver sottratto il testamento del padre e di volersi appropriare di un «malloppo» sicuramente nascosto da qualche parte. Simenon, anche questa volta, si rivela magistrale nel mettere in scena un dramma familiare, portando alla luce, come lui solo sa fare, attriti, risentimenti, menzogne. Sullo sfondo, l'imminente fine dell'universo - di facce, di odori, di rituali - dove i tre fratelli sono cresciuti: quelle Halles che nel giro di pochi anni spariranno, insieme a un pezzo dell'anima della città.
