Pubblicato nel 1935, Qui non può succedere si è rivelato un romanzo profetico. Sinclair Lewis immagina una realtà alternativa in cui, alle elezioni presidenziali del 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt viene sconfitto dal senatore populista Berzelius «Buzz» Windrip. La sua vittoria segna una svolta nella storia degli Stati Uniti, decretando la fine della democrazia e l’avvento del fascismo oltreoceano. Dopo aver promesso drastiche riforme economiche e sociali nel segno di un ritorno al patriottismo e ai valori della tradizione per conquistare il favore degli elettori, Buzz Windrip assume gradualmente il controllo del governo con l’aiuto di una forza paramilitare senza scrupoli e instaura un regime che ricorda da vicino i totalitarismi europei.
Con questo brillante esperimento distopico Lewis riesce ad aprirci gli occhi sul pericolo costante rappresentato dal tramonto delle democrazie: non un fatto del passato, ma un rischio oggi più che mai attuale.
