Dopo una gioventù da teppista per le strade di Belgrado, negli anni Ottanta è stato tra i maggiori ricercati dall'Interpol per via dei suoi crimini coperti dall'attività di agente segreto per conto del governo jugoslavo. Negli anni Novanta diventò il principale organizzatore e artefice della feroce pulizia etnica voluta dal presidente serbo Milosevi? durante la guerra in Croazia e in Bosnia del 1991-1995. Fu lui a riunire e addestrare i più feroci hooligan della Stella Rossa di Belgrado, carcerati e banditi, e a trasformarli nelle "Tigri": soldati spietati che stupravano e uccidevano perpetrando, di fatto, un genocidio. Arkan, che aveva sposato la più celebre pop star del suo paese in un matrimonio principesco, era popolarissimo, l'uomo più ricco della Serbia e solo dopo l'intervento nato del 1999 venne accusato di crimini contro l'umanità. Ciononostante non fu mai portato in giudizio perché, il 15 gennaio 2000, venne ucciso nella hall di un albergo di Belgrado con modalità da esecuzione, in circostanze misteriose, degne della sua vita di vero e proprio "assassino di Stato".

Wow. The book wasn't perfect by any means, but with a subject so fascinating it hardly had to be - plus, I feel like I have at least somewhat of an understanding of the horrifying confusion that was the '90s Balkan War(s) now.

This is a disturbing book about the violent life of a bank robber turned war lord. Zeljko Raznatovic, or Arkan the Tiger, as he is referred to, started robbing banks all over Europe then moved onto leading a group of Serb paramilitary fighters that fought battles during the Balkan war in the 1990s.
