Quando nasce un bambino c’è un prima e un dopo. In questo romanzo, una donna varca la soglia di casa con in braccio la sua neonata e si rende subito conto che la trepidante attesa ha lasciato il posto all’ansia, allo smarrimento, e anche a un energico desiderio di avere indietro la vita di prima. Troppo tardi.
La piccola, affettuosamente soprannominata Bottone, più che a un angioletto assomiglia a una sanguisuga. È nata, è uscita dal corpo della madre, eppure la madre si rende conto di non averla ancora pienamente accolta. Il bell’appartamento di New York condiviso con il marito, la loro quotidianità fatta di lavori creativi e cene con gli amici, tutto il loro mondo, insomma, è svanito e si è trasformato in una nursery. In un angolo della camera da letto languisce il tavolo dove, solo qualche settimana prima, la protagonista traduceva e malediceva gli editori per i tempi stretti delle consegne. Ora a scandire il tempo sono le poppate, il rumore del tiralatte, i pianti della bambina, le sue urla imperiose… e le giornate con lei diventano lunghe e solitarie, con il marito premuroso ma spesso fuori per lavoro, e quindi sostanzialmente lontano, inutile. Nella sequenza di ore e giorni che assomiglia sempre più a una prigionia, l’unico sollievo sono le visite di un anziano vicino un po’ strambo, evidentemente malato, un musicista che vive al piano di sopra e che come lei non riesce a dormire. Entrambi percepiscono il senso di una minaccia incombente: ce la faranno a salvarsi?
Szilvia Molnar lascia stupefatti perché racconta la fragilità di una neomamma, pericolosamente al confine con la follia, la sua lotta per ritornare padrona di sé stessa e dei propri pensieri, e lo fa con una lucidità spiazzante e al tempo stesso con un’ironia straordinariamente affermativa, piena di vita e di umorismo sovversivo.
