Alle soglie dei sessant’anni, Anders Hill, consulente finanziario di successo, proprietario di una bella casa in un quartiere residenziale di lusso, sposato e padre, decide di cambiare vita. Va in pensione anticipata, divorzia, e si trova improvvisamente ad avere molto tempo e pochi denari a disposizione. Ma senza l’identità sicura che si è costruito a fatica, senza la presenza rassicurante di una moglie di lunga data, Anders riapre ferite mai rimarginate... Sotto il microscopio attivato dalla scrittura brillante di Thompson, la vita nei quartieri residenziali di lusso viene vivisezionata senza pietà: ipocrisie, tradimenti coniugali e non, rivalità sociali, indifferenza verso i problemi dei figli. Lo stesso accade all’ambiente delle banche e delle finanziarie protagoniste del boom dei decenni passati, quelle che hanno portato alla crisi che stiamo vivendo. Thompson è maestro nell’alleggerire il racconto di questa America spietata con una vena sottile di ironia, spesso di comicità, che accompagna il lettore fino all’imprevedibile scelta finale del «nuovo» Anders.

The negating emptiness of a man’s late middle age is examined alongside of the encroaching isolation of America’s late-stage capitalism. I have grown so tired of books about ne'er-do-well men and the wives and mothers who love them anyway. Not a likable character in the book!
It was a great book in a lot of ways: the characters were good, the story and plot worked well, the writing was nice. A family drama that felt a little bit new and for our generation.
Couldn't really relate to any of the characters except for the tortoise. Disappointed.
