Esattamente un anno dopo la cattura di Warren Hoyt, il serial killer soprannominato il Chirurgo, un nuovo incubo è calato su Boston. Come uno spettro, l’assassino si introduce nelle case. In un’estate caldissima funestata da raccapriccianti delitti, la detective della Omicidi Jane Rizzoli nota subito le preoccupanti analogie tra il modus operandi del nuovo serial killer e quello del Chirurgo, il folle che aveva tentato di ucciderla. Tormentata dal suo vecchio nemico al punto di vederne l’ombra dappertutto, Jane non è la sola a temere che il Chirurgo abbia trovato un allievo. Accanto a lei ci sono il detective Korsak, ruvido e gretto ma comunque buon professionista, e l’agente dell’FBI Dean, che sa più di quello che è disposto a dire e dal quale Jane si sente attratta.
