Presentiamo qui due difficili casi di Sherlock Holmes, il genio della logica deduttiva nato dalla penna di Arthur Conan Doyle. In "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" la giovane Helen Stoner si rivolge a Holmes perché strane cose succedono nella casa di campagna che, dopo la morte della madre, divide con il patrigno. Due anni prima la sorella Julie, che stava per sposarsi, le aveva riferito di strani fischi sordi che avvertiva nel cuore della notte, finché una notte aveva farfugliato di una banda maculata per poi spirare. E anche Helen, pure lei in procinto di sposarsi, ha udito nella notte un fischio sordo. Holmes decide di recarsi immediatamente sul luogo: dopo un'attenta ispezione, comprende che un terribile delitto sta per compiersi, ma riesce a tendere all'assassino una trappola... In "The Adventure of the Abbey Grange" la vittima è il ricchissimo Sir Eustace Brackenstall, che giace sul pavimento della grande sala da pranzo della sua grande casa, col cranio spaccato da un violento colpo di attizzatoio. La giovane e bella moglie australiana, sposata da appena un anno, presenta vistose tumefazioni al volto e fornisce una versione dei fatti apparentemente inattaccabile, che attribuisce il delitto a tre criminali introdottisi per commettere un furto. Ma Holmes non si ferma alla testimonianza della donna e seguendo indizi minimi dà inizio alla mirabolante avventura dell'intelletto che lo porta indefettibilmente a scoprire la verità.

It is a comprehensive collection and a lot of these stories are terrific.

Five stars is the highest accolade on offer, but then I would have gone higher ! Aside from the lack of Sherlock Holmes (which are not included) there are 1201 pages of everything else in this book. There is something for every one, pirates, soldiers, hunting, etc. I particularly liked The Stripped
I really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would! Sherlock’s mind is fascinating and I love the friendship he has with Watson. I’m very happy that I took the time to read it.
The quality of stories in this collection is inconsistent. Some are very interesting while some are silly and pointless. I had very high expectations from this book after finishing the sherlock holmes stories. Only a few stories were ingenious enough to fulfill those expectations.
Superb storytelling and delicious language but then I am a big fan of Sherlock Holmes. Some stories are predictable and some sea stories can get a little technical but otherwise, most stories were unputdownable to me. In the author's own words, I would call this book "singularly noteworthy."
Have read all of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and probably others as well, just never bothered to put them in to amazon or goodreads, so dates wrong. Some KU some paperback some hardback some collections.
