Dovevo sposarla, finalmente, quando sentivo tanto profondamente che, nel momento stesso in cui sarebbe divenuta mia moglie, essa avrebbe cessato di essere l'ideale fanciulla che io amavo, per prender posto nel reale, mentre il suo ricordo soltanto mi sarebbe stato prezioso, mentre ella mi sarebbe stata preziosa, ma solo nel passato? [...] Kierkegaard considerava 'Timore e tremore' come il suo libro migliore; sarebbe bastato, diceva, per rendere immortale il suo nome. Mai la sua 'dialettica lirica', la sua arte di far sentire sopra di noi i caratteri specifici di quella sfera religiosa, al di sotto della quale egli pretende rimanere, ci hanno commosso tanto profondamente.
