Trigger Warning è un'espressione che si incontra a volte navigando in Internet e che segnala la presenza di un contenuto difficile da maneggiare, immagini o concetti che potrebbero turbare i visitatori. Da qualche parte nel mondo, alcune università stanno valutando l'ipotesi di mettere un trigger warning anche su opere letterarie e artistiche che potrebbero spaventare o inquietare gli studenti. Ma le storie, ci suggerisce Neil Gaiman, non avrebbero forse sempre bisogno di questa avvertenza? Attenzione, c'è un grilletto ed è pronto a sparare! Le storie infatti molto spesso turbano le nostre certezze, aprono porte che volevamo sigillate, ci tolgono il terreno sotto i piedi e ci scaraventano in luoghi oscuri e poco accoglienti. Il cuore inizia a battere più forte, manca il respiro, il passato ritorna con tutti i suoi mostri chiusi nell'armadio. In questa raccolta di racconti c'è il meglio di Neil Gaiman, e quindi ci sono storie che potrebbero turbarvi. "In questo libro, come nella vita, ci sono morte e dolore, lacrime e disagio, violenza di tutti i tipi. C'è anche bontà, qualche volta. Persino qualche lieto fine. Ci sono mostri, in queste pagine, e dove c'è un mostro c'è anche un miracolo." Ci sono racconti lunghi e altri brevi, qualche poesia. Ma una cosa è sicura: ogni pagina di questo libro è un piccolo grilletto, e ogni volta che viene premuto nel buio, noi impariamo qualcosa di noi stessi e delle nostre vite.

Gaiman has written so many weird and wonderful things over the years. I find his talent truly remarkable, especially the way he can dip in and out of different genres. I prefer Gaiman's novel-length work, but you do get something in this collection you don't get in longform: his huge range and vast depths of creativity.
