A Chipping Cleghorn, tranquillo villaggio della campagna inglese, la vita scorre monotona, scandita da avvenimenti di scarsa importanza subito registrati dal quotidiano locale, apprezzato soprattutto per la rubrica di annunci a pagamento. Un bel giorno, in mezzo ai messaggi personali, ne compare uno insolito: «Un delitto avrà luogo venerdì 29 ottobre alle 18.30 a Little Paddocks. Si pregano gli amici di voler prendere nota di questo avvertimento che non sarà più ripetuto». Questo programma viene effettivamente rispettato: alla presenza dei tanti curiosi accorsi a Little Paddocks pensando di partecipare a un gioco di società, infatti, qualcuno riesce a portare a termine un vero omicidio. La polizia è sconcertata, incapace di risolvere il caso, tanto le modalità del crimine sono incredibili. Solo l'angelica Miss Marple, capitata come sempre al posto giusto nel momento giusto, riuscirà a venire capo del problema...
