Kristin è la figlia di Lavrans, fattore stimato ed estremamente religioso, cui la protagonista è molto legata. È una bambina vivace, rispettosa della religione ma nel contempo animata da una forte volontà, insolita nella Norvegia medievale per una donna. La sua tenacia, tuttavia, non è sufficiente quando la famiglia ne combina il matrimonio con un uomo che Kristin non ama. La decisione dei genitori sembra perentoria ma, dopo un tentativo di violenza da parte di un giovane del posto che macchia la reputazione di Kristin, malgrado la ragazza ne sia ovviamente la vittima, il matrimonio è posticipato. La protagonista ottiene il permesso di trascorrere un periodo in convento e, per puro caso, si imbatte in Erlend, rampollo di un'importante famiglia, già scomunicato per aver avuto due figli da una donna sposata. Kristin ed Erlend intraprendono una relazione clandestina che la famiglia non può accettare, per paura di uno scandalo. Tra eventi inattesi e presagi malinconici, la serenità sembra rimanere per la donna un desiderio irrealizzabile. A cent'anni dall'uscita in Norvegia, e dopo decenni di oblio in Italia, torna in una nuova traduzione il primo volume della trilogia che valse a Sigrid Undset il premio Nobel per la letteratura, uno dei capolavori della letteratura mondiale.

This is one trilogy of books, Kristin Lavransdatter, where the experience changes with age. Deeply profound, this book can be hard to read as it can touch so many bruises.
