Sinossi
Pubblicato nel 1927 è il romanzo più tipico di Pirandello, quello in cui meglio si manifesta il nucleo fondamentale di quel particolare sentimento della vita e della società che sta alla base di tutta la sua grande opera teatrale. Vitangelo Moscarda si convince improvvisamente che l'uomo non è "uno", ma "centomila"; vale a dire possiede tante diverse personalità quante gli altri gliene attribuiscono. Solamente chi compie questa scoperta diventa in realtà "nessuno", almeno per se stesso, in quanto gli rimane la possibilità di osservare come lui appare agli altri, cioè le sue centomila differenti personalità. Su questo ragionamento il tranquillo Gengé decide di sconvolgere la sua vita.
