Victor è un ragazzo orfano di padre e madre, cresciuto nelle campagne della Boemia da una donna semplice. Per lui è il tempo inquieto del passaggio al mondo adulto, sospeso tra le incertezze di due età, su cui spicca però un'unica, tenace convinzione: non prenderà mai moglie. Prima di lasciare per sempre il guscio della giovinezza e indossare i panni dell'uomo responsabile, accettando un impiego statale, è chiamato a compiere un viaggio: un suo burbero e solitario zio, che vive al riparo dal mondo su un'isola remota, vorrebbe incontrarlo. Le ragioni che si celano dietro a questa richiesta resteranno oscure finché il rapporto tra i due non avrà superato le iniziali durezze e spigolosità, per poi risolversi in una sorprendente epifania. "Uno scapolo" è uno studio psicologico e un delicato lavoro di cesello, dove l'attento realismo, il desiderio di limpidezza e misura, il pessimismo sottile ma mai distruttivo e il pensoso umorismo compongono il più umano e autobiografico degli scritti di Adalbert Stifter, la cui produzione artistica merita di essere riscoperta nella sua totalità.

I only 'discovered' Adalbert Stifter, the nineteenth century Austrian writer, for myself this year. Rock Crystal was my first Stifter book and was a beautiful read.
