Akari, sedici anni, sta attraversando un periodo difficile. Non trae beneficio da nessun tipo di relazione con gli altri, né in famiglia né a scuola, e sembra anche avere qualche difficoltà d'apprendimento. Ma è una fan provetta: segue e cataloga ossessivamente ogni cosa che riguardi il suo idolo, Masaki. Il romanzo si apre con un diverbio tra Masaki e una fan: Masaki perde le staffe e, travolto da un'ondata di critiche da parte del pubblico, è costretto a ritirarsi. Akari è persa. Non ha idea di come riprendere in mano la sua vita. Amava parlare di Masaki come di una sorta di "colonna": il suo intero mondo ruota attorno a lui. Il resto della sua vita è allo sfascio, ecco allora che quando la "colonna" scompare, Akari cade preda della disperazione. Prova a scoprire dove abita Masaki ma non fa che sprofondare ancora di più nella tristezza. Così comincia a rimettere in ordine la sua stanza, ridotta a luogo di solitudine e di caos. È un inizio. Per un po' riuscirà a malapena ad alzarsi da terra, ma a poco a poco Akari saprà muovere i primi passi per costruirsi una nuova "colonna"...
