Di fronte al ritorno dei nazionalismi, al divario sempre più ampio tra ricchi e poveri e allo stress che il carico di lavoro porta ogni giorno nelle nostre vite, siamo costretti a riconoscere che le nostre aspettative sullo sviluppo liberale della società occidentale si sono drammaticamente consumate, lasciandoci di fronte alla dura verità: senza utopie, tutto quello che resta è un presente senza orizzonte, il presente immobile e sterile della tecnocrazia. Ma quali sono le utopie di cui abbiamo bisogno per rilanciare la politica e trovare la strategia per una convivenza sostenibile? Secondo Bregman, è arrivato il tempo di ridurre consumi e ore di lavoro, di aprire i confini degli stati e combattere sul serio la povertà, di concedere a tutti un reddito minimo, sottraendolo alle vuote retoriche populiste che si stanno impadronendo del dibattito mediatico in tutto il mondo democratico. "Oggi la pressione e il lavoro eccessivo sono diventati uno status symbol. Avere un po' di tempo libero è considerato come essere disoccupati, non come la scelta intelligente di anteporre la vita al lavoro". Per vivere meglio, secondo Bregman, basterebbe lavorare meno. Ma come si potrebbe sopravvivere? Concedendo a tutti il reddito di base. Un pensiero utopico, che in Olanda ha dato vita a un movimento per il reddito minimo, catturando l'attenzione dei media internazionali. D'altra parte, non si tratta di un'idea nuova né stravagante: "Da troppo tempo ci alleniamo a combattere, non a divertirci", scriveva John Maynard Keynes nel 1930.

Radical ideas, at first glance, but all put forward in this book aren't unreasonable, neither are they unrealistic. Really wanted to like this. I'm a big fan of The Correspondent's journalism, and believe that basic income is an important idea whose time might have come. I was probably misguided as I thought this book would deal predominantly with the idea of a basic income. Specifically, i was intrested in the arguments pro and against it and, preferably, an analysis how it is possible to implement, the impact of automation and which steps might be taken right now.
