L'atlante è, letteralmente, la cronistoria di questa erranza continua e irrequieta, ricostruita attraverso cinquantadue oggetti narrativi diseguali per lunghezza e per tono, ma accomunati dalla stessa brutale innocenza e umanità. I frammenti e i racconti sono organizzati in una struttura palindroma: il primo testo viene ripreso dall'ultimo, il secondo dal penultimo, e il racconto centrale contiene tutti gli altri, come una silloge ideale. Alcuni testi rappresentano una versione compressa dei libri che Vollmann al momento della pubblicazione aveva già scritto. Tanto basta per lasciar capire che L'atlante è un viaggio insieme geografico e personale: una mappa per orientarsi nel mondo «fuori» e al tempo stesso scoprire l'universo narrativo di uno scrittore che conosce ben pochi paragoni.
