A questo ironico e garbato erudito Scott affida il compito di reggere le fila delle tante storie e dei numerosi personaggi che affollano il romanzo: il misterioso giovane che si fa chiamare Lovel, in viaggio in Scozia per conquistare la ritrosa Isabel; il padre di lei, Sir Arthur Wardour, pessimo amministratore del patrimonio di famiglia e con un debole per l’esoterismo; il mendicante Edie Ochiltree, romantica canaglia dall’aria affidabile; Lord Geraldin di Glenallan che, dopo una vita di dolore e rimorsi, ritroverà in Lovel il figlio creduto morto. Storia d’amore e di intrighi con improbabili colpi di scena, travestimenti e agnizioni, L’antiquario mescola gusto settecentesco, suggestioni gotiche e tensioni romantiche. Come scrive Manganelli nella postfazione: «Col fascino aggressivo del contafavole e l’oltraggiosa voglia di divertirsi e divertire, Scott riesce a farsi leggere nel modo che più gli conviene. A libro chiuso si fanno luce le incongruenze e le ridondanze, ma il libro resta nella memoria come qualcosa di vivo, tangibile, dinamico».

I adore Sir Walter Scott's writing! He can be a little long-winded at times, but it is absolutely worth it. I wish that this story had focused more on Mr. Lovel as the hero, instead of telling nearly everything from the Antiquary's point of view. A pesar de ser de Sir Walter, se me ha hecho cuesta arriba. Ciertos personajes, diálogos y situaciones memorables, pero una trama en exceso folletinesca para mi gusto. Una especie de culebrón escocés con elementos románticos y sobrenaturales.
